Hiking in Aruba

Aruba is known worldwide for its white-sand beaches, clear blue sea, and tropical atmosphere. But hidden behind the famous beaches lies a completely different world. Rugged cliffs, impressive rock formations, deserted beaches, ancient cacti, and spectacular viewpoints where you can gaze out over the Caribbean Sea for kilometers.

You won't always discover the most beautiful places in Aruba from a car or from the beach. Some of the most special locations can only be reached on foot. During a hike, you'll discover a side of Aruba that many visitors and even locals miss. You'll reach hidden spots where you'll sometimes be completely alone and experience the island in a way you'll never forget.

Discover the most beautiful hiking trails in Aruba

Aruba offers far more hiking opportunities than most people expect. In addition to its famous beaches, the island is home to countless spots where you can enjoy peace and quiet, nature, and spectacular views. Some impressive hiking areas include:

  • The rugged north coast
  • Arikok National Park
  • The area surrounding the California Lighthouse
  • Seroe Colorado and San Nicolas

Why use our hiking guide?

Of course, you can search online for hiking trails in Aruba on your own. But in practice, you’ll often run into the same challenges:

  • Information is scattered across various websites;
  • Routes are not always clearly described;
  • You don't know how hard a walk really is;
  • Parking information is missing;
  • You don't know if a route is still up to date;
  • The most beautiful hidden spots are often not mentioned.

That's why we've already done the legwork for you. We've walked, checked, and described each hike in detail ourselves.

Always up-to-date information thanks to our e-guide

We deliberately chose an e-guide instead of a traditional hiking booklet. A digital guide has a major advantage: it can continue to evolve and be updated as needed.

The hiking trails on Aruba change regularly. For instance, an unpaved road can suddenly become paved, an access point can change, or a landmark along the way might look different.

That is why we regularly review the routes and update the information as needed. We can also add new photos, tips, and additional information to ensure that the guide remains up-to-date and reliable.

Who is this hiking guide intended for?

This guide is suitable for just about anyone who wants to explore Aruba on foot. For example:

  • vacationers;
  • residents of Aruba;
  • nature lovers;
  • photographers;
  • experienced hikers;
  • beginner hikers.

Due to the wide variety of routes, there are walks suitable for every level.

Is hiking good on Aruba?

Absolutely. Aruba might not be the first island that comes to mind for hiking. But due to its dry climate, rugged nature, and varied landscapes, Aruba is surprisingly suitable for hiking. You'll walk along the north coast with its impressive waves, through cactus fields, over hills with panoramic views, and past hidden beaches where hardly any tourists go.

Where can you hike on Aruba?

On Aruba, you can hike in many different places. Below we share 3 beloved spots:

Hiking in Arikok National Park

The most famous nature reserve for hiking is Arikok National Park. The park covers about a large part of Aruba and clearly shows how special the island's landscape is. Here you will find, among other things:

  • rugged rock formations;
  • cactuses;
  • caves;
  • natural springs;
  • historical sites;
  • Unusual animals.

Within Arikok, various hiking trails are available. Some trails are marked, but not all beautiful spots are easy to find without preparation.

2. Hiking along the north coast of Aruba

The north coast is perhaps one of the most impressive areas for hiking. Here you can find, for example:

  • hidden beaches;
  • natural bridges;
  • rugged cliffs;
  • abandoned bays;
  • spectacular viewpoints.

The north coast is less touristy. Here, you often get the feeling that you have Aruba all to yourself.

3. Hiking around San Nicolas

The south of Aruba is also absolutely worth seeing. Around San Nicolas, you'll find colorful areas, impressive coastlines, and beautiful views.

For example, a longer and more challenging route is the hike from San Nicolas towards the California Lighthouse. This trek is approximately 37 kilometers long and is especially suitable for experienced hikers.

How difficult are the hikes in Aruba?

The difficulty of hikes on Aruba varies considerably. The island has walks for different levels. In the hiking guide, each route clearly indicates:

  • the distance;
  • the estimated walking time;
  • what you can expect along the way.

Most hikes people take on vacation are between 1.5 and 3 hours. Many routes are around 6 to 11 kilometers and are manageable with normal fitness.

For those seeking more of a challenge, longer hikes are available, including routes of 12, 15 kilometers, or even multi-day distances such as the 37-kilometer long trek.

Is hiking on Aruba fun for beginners?

Yes, certainly. You don't need to be an experienced hiker to discover Aruba on foot. For beginners, we especially recommend:

  • a walk early in the day;
  • to bring enough water;
  • to choose a route that suits your fitness level;
  • Wear good shoes.

Are the hiking trails on Aruba marked?

It varies by area. There are several marked routes within Arikok National Park. However, outside the park, many hikes are not clearly marked.

Many beautiful places on Aruba are not located along a standard hiking trail. Thanks to our hiking guide, you will discover these places. They are clearly marked with photos in the hiking guide.

What do you take with you on a hike in Aruba?

Good preparation ensures that you can enjoy yourself optimally. We recommend always taking with you:

  • Water
  • Sunburn
  • Good shoes
  • Hat
  • Food or snacks
  • Route on your phone or printed

The best time to hike on Aruba is during the dry season, which runs from January to June. The weather is generally sunny and warm, with lower humidity and less chance of rain. This makes for more comfortable hiking conditions.

You can hike on Aruba year-round. Due to the constant temperatures, the island is always suitable for exploration. However, there are times when hiking is more pleasant. The best times are:

  • Early morning: 6:00 AM to 10:30 AM
  • Late afternoon: 4:30 PM until sunset

Between approximately 11:00 AM and 3:30 PM, the sun is at its highest, and hiking can be more strenuous.
